place value.

Example: The number 43

The left digit is the tens place. It tells you that there
are 4 tens.
         10+10+10+10 = 40

The last or right digit is the ones place. It tells you
there are 3 ones
          1+1+1 = 3

Therefore, there are 4 sets of 10, plus 3 ones in the
number 43.
