Rounding Decimals to the Nearest Hundredth
Remember: If less than 5, round down. If 5 or greater,
round up.
To round number to nearest hundredth, Look at the
decimal to the immediate right of the hundredth
place. If it is 5 or above, round up.
If it is 4 or below, round down and leave the
hundredth place digit unchanged.
Example: Round 2.4562 to nearest hundredth.
The 5 is in the hundredth place.
Look at the digit to the immediate right of the
hundredth place.
2.4662
6 is greater than 5, so round up. Add 1 to the
digit you are rounding to.
Replace all digits to right of the one you are rounding to
with zeros.
2.4600
So, 2.4562 rounded to the nearest hundredth
is 2.4600
What if the number we were rounding was 2.4532
instead.
Number to the right of the hundredth digit 3.
Since the 3 is less than 5 we round down and
leave the hundredth place digit unchanged.
2.4062
Replace all digits to right of the one you are rounding to with
zeros.
2.4000
